Father’s Day Gift: Silk Screen Tie

Father’s Day Gift: Silk Screen Tie

The kids and I love to make handmade gifts for my husband for Father’s Day. He always enjoys them so much more than he would a store-bought gift. Handmade gifts are super meaningful, and are always sentimental for years to come for the recipient. This year we tackled a quick and easy necktie project that can be customized for any dad! Silk screening is a fun way to create a clean, flat design on a fabric surface rather than a raised effect you get with bottled fabric paints. Using the fabric dyes and a silk screening kit like the Silkscreen Factory, you can create a wide variety of projects... Read Post

Developing Fine Motor Skills Through Paper Crafting

Developing Fine Motor Skills Through Paper Crafting

My kids had a great time honing their fine motor skills with ALEX’s Tissue Paper Art craft kit! It comes with 6 self-stick patterns – two for each of my three “big” kids (aged 3, 5, and 7). I loved that it was something all of them could enjoy. Separating the tiny squares of tissue paper is one of the more demanding tasks; it is also self-correcting, since if you forget to separate the squares your little ball of scrunched-up paper is clearly too large. This activity is also great for kids to develop planning skills. My son learned after working on the wheels of his car that it would... Read Post

5 Tips for Taking Great Photos of Your Kids

5 Tips for Taking Great Photos of Your Kids

I am not a  professional photographer but, I do love taking pictures of my children, and know that someday these pictures will remind them of fun memories and the love that we have for each other.  Let’s face it, though. Taking pictures of kids is HARD! They don’t sit still, they have “fake smiles,” and they lose focus easy… just to name a few issues. Over the last few years, I have tried to learn more about how to take better photos of my children. And while I’m still no master, I do have a few tricks in my repertoire that have resulted in some of my favorite shots of my four children. So,... Read Post

Celebrate Spring with Giant Paper Flowers

Celebrate Spring with Giant Paper Flowers

My Giant Paper Flowers is one of my all-time favorite ALEX products. It’s not just because it was one of the first products I helped create for ALEX, it’s because this one really has a wow factor. Take brightly colored tissue paper that’s been cut into whimsical petals, add pipe cleaners, fold and fluff. It’s truly spectacular! I invited my sweet niece Alyssa (10 years old) over to make some flowers! First she chose her sheets of tissue paper, stacked them up and began to accordion fold them. Then she twisted a pipe cleaner stem around them, spread out the petals and began to fluff them up... Read Post

Shrinky Dinks Magic

Shrinky Dinks Magic

My kids had a fantastic time making these “Cool Stuff” Shrinky Dinks! Shrinky Dinks are made out of a special “paper” that shrinks down in the oven, so it’s like making your very own toys! This particular kit has fun robots, vehicles, and other pre-cut shapes to color. The colored pencils come included, so it was a simple project to pull out on a rainy afternoon – and it was also a quick enough project to let the kids do as a reward for getting ready for school really quickly in the morning! It was interesting to watch how my three kids approached this project. My son Johnny (four years old)... Read Post
