Top Secret Spy Activity For Kids: Mystery Scavenger Hunt

My eight-year-old son is really into spy, detective, undercover agent type stuff. He thinks it’s pretty cool to look for clues, and solve mysteries.  So recently, with some help from ALEX Toys and their Super Sleuth Kit, I put together an exciting mystery scavenger hunt for him. His mission was to explore the crime scene, gather his subjects, decipher the clues, and catch the culprit!

The kit includes items for fingerprinting, super cool rear view mirror glasses, a magnifying glass, and flashlight, as well as information on a variety of codes. Beforehand, I created the crime scene, and the “Top Secret” clue cards!

The crime?

Someone drank Dad’s coffee!

The crime scene included the empty cup (complete with coffee residue, fingerprints, and even a lipstick stain), a card that told him what the crime and his mission were, and a stack of clue cards.

Each clue card was created using different code from the detective activity kit. Each clue card had a different bit of information he needed to decipher including his suspects and key bits of evidence.

His favorite part was fingerprinting his sisters! I laughed when he wrote down our aliases. My alias? “Mom” of course!

Eventually, he was able to collect fingerprints and identify the culprit. We learned so much about fingerprinting and the different types of fingerprints. It was really interesting! The last clue card revealed the culprit’s identity using the secret code markers included in the kit.

John David had a blast as a pretend play detective, and is already asking when I can put together another mystery for him to solve!
